The financial storm that has rocked the world began brewing in the US when congress pushed the idea of home ownership for all, propping up those who couldn't make the down payments. When it all went wrong the government promised the biggest financial stimulus packages in history and gargantuan bailouts. But what crazed logic is that: propping up debt with more debt? Drawing on recently found film rushes, rare documentary footage and clips of Third Cinema, Yaqubi will introduce us to a fascinating and often neglected world that engages with the depth of Palestine's film-making history, its role in shaping Palestinian identity, and its ties to the wider Third Cinema movement. The presentation will raise questions with regards to the role of 'militant cinema' as a tool of documentation but also to intervene in the political upheavals and liberation movements that shook the world in the midst of the past century. Counterpoising the militant period of Palestine cinema with post-Oslo cinema will open up a conversation about the political role and nature of Palestinian cinematic language today, its potential and possibility. Palestine Cuts is a new space for emerging and established filmmakers and video-artists to present and discuss their work in an engaging and encouraging environment. It promotes stimulating audiovisual projects (documentary and fiction film, video, installations, etc.) that challenge existing conventions and offer critical and alternative views about Palestine and Palestinians. Palestine Cuts also is interested in the broader regional and global socio-political, economic and cultural context of which Palestine is an intrinsic part. In this sense, we hope to bring Palestine-related work into conversation with other Arab and international filmmakers and audiovisual artists. Through screenings, discussions, master classes as well as open and closed workshops for work in progress and finished projects, Palestine Cuts hopes to attract a wide array of artists, producers, curators, critics, scholars, activists and others interested in committed audiovisual work that opens up new spaces for imagination.

In Australian Cinemas Now. In NZ Cinemas September 21. Narrated by Samuel L Jackson, this mesmerising Oscar-nominated film channels the impassioned words of writer James Baldwin, one of the most incisive commentators on race in America. People's Choice Documentary Award-winner at Toronto, Oscar-nominated and a box office success in the US, I Am Not Your Negro takes as its starting point notes for a book Baldwin intended to write about the lives and assassinations of his friends Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., and Medgar Evers. That unwritten book finds life in this remarkable film which melds Baldwin's unpublished writing (powerfully narrated by Jackson), archival footage of his eloquent analysis of the times, and contemporary Black Lives Matter protests. Haitian Peck (Lumumba; Moloch Tropical, SFF 2010) is a stridently political filmmaker and here his profound and poetic cine-essay is, as The New York Times describes it, "life-altering". In his new film TrumpLand, Moore explores Donald Trump’s influence on the 2016 election, using recordings of a stand-up/commentary routine he performed in Ohio—a crucial battleground state in this race. Having grown up in the Midwest, the Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker empathizes with the men and women who support Trump, but he believes Trump's popularity is nothing more than a hand grenade for a group that feels marginalized. According to Moore, a Trump presidency will be the biggest "F**k you" ever recorded—one that will quickly fade when he assumes office. On the tenth anniversary of the Attacks of September 11th, 2001, expert witnesses gathered at Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada to provide evidence-based research that called into question the official story of 9/11. This was known as The Toronto Hearings on 9/11. Over a period of four days, these experts in Structural Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, and History gave researched and professional testimony to an international panel of distinguished judges. The panel of judges, in conjunction with the steering committee would go on to publish their final analysis of the evidence provided, which called for a new investigation into the Attacks of September 11th, 2001. This film is a summary of the strongest evidence given over the four days of hearings. To see the hearings in their entirety please visit http://torontohearings.org/ or read the final report available on the aforementioned website.
